Wedding Recap!

I think my body is finally letting me know that I need to slow down and take it easy. We have traveled the last three weekends and it has finally caught up with me. I am not sure if I have a cold, allergies, or something else, but I am so congested and I know I need a good night's rest ASAP. Before I venture to bed way early tonight, I wanted to show you the few pictures I have from the wedding this weekend!

AJ and I were the only people from our grad school crowd that made it to the wedding, so I was really glad we made the trip and I know my friend was happy we were there. Here is the dress I decided to wear. I bought it at Banana Republic a few months ago and wasn't sure if I loved it, but after wearing it the other night, I have decided that it was definitely a good choice.

There was a 4 hour break between the end of the ceremony and the cocktail hour, so AJ and I holed up in our hotel room (it MONSOONED during the entire break) and watched the Harry Potter marathon while drinking some Blue Light and playing cards.

Here we are at the cocktail hour. Ignore my red nose, this was when I was first starting to feel sick!

We had a lot of fun this weekend, but now I am ready to slow down and spend some quiet time in DC until we have to begin the process of moving!

Dress Woahs

Can you believe it is almost the weekend?? Our district is closed on Fridays during the summer so my weekend starts now!

Tomorrow we are headed back to NY for a wedding, which will be the first one we are able to attend since getting married last summer. I don't know why, but I am worried that I might get sad and experience the post-wedding blues I never really got last summer. Let's hope not!

I was hoping to wear this Michael by Michael Kors dress that I bought from HauteLook (if you want a referral, let me know!), but alas, it has not yet been delivered.

We have another wedding to attend in August, so I will probably save the dress for that.

My second choice for the wedding was this lovely dress Alson bought me for my birthday last year

I have only worn it twice (on my birthday and on our honeymoon) and since then it has been sitting in the dry cleaning basket. When we were back in NY a couple weeks ago I had my mom take it to the cleaners, and the jewels that hang on the back broke during cleaning. UGH!

So now I'm off to my closet to pick out a third choice dress....

Yesterday was our one year anniversary! We celebrated by spending the day in Annapolis, which might be the cutest town ever. Ready for the one sentence recap?

We had lunch on the deck of Pussers, moved to the bar for a Painkiller, walked around town and did some window shopping, meandered through an art festival, ate red velvet cupcakes in lieu of wedding cake, took a boat ride, did a wine tasting, bought wine, ate Mexican (our favorite), and returned home to snuggle with our puppy. It was a great day! We decided not to buy each other presents and instead spent our money on the day trip.

In other news, it's my last official day of vacation and instead of spending it outdoors at the public pool we discovered on Saturday, I need to clean our place before my brother gets here tomorrow for a round two interview (remember, he was here last month?) and for the open house our landlord is having this weekend while we are back in NY for a wedding. So I am obviously really excited to move, but am dreading the actual move and all the cleaning and packing that comes with it. So with that said, off I go to clean, clean, clean!

No Wrinkles!

Last week I had my first anti-wrinkle facial. Usually when I get a facial I do a basic European facial that moisturizes and exfoliates. Since I am starting to notice some slight changes in my skin and I am in my mid-twenties, I thought it was time to upgrade.

When I entered the room, my esthetician asked me about my skin, including if I had a sunburn, if my skin was sensitive, and if I was not intolerant of pain. Apparently these three things exclude you from getting the anti-wrinkle facial because it includes a chemical peel. I had been in the sun on Wednesday when we were at the golf tournament, but I was by no means burnt. I also consider myself to have sensitive skin to the extent that I flush really easily. I do not though, have bad reactions to new cleansers or break out very easily, so I guess this wasn't an issue.

In the end she decided that we would do the chemical peel, but only leave it on for 4 minutes since this was my first one and she didn't want me to have a bad reaction (a la Samantha from SATC). She also prepped my skin with some kind of protectant to help prevent any kind of extreme irritation.

So I am guessing that you don't want to hear about the entire facial, but just the chemical peel, so I will skip everything else she did. She used a 30% Lactic Acid chemical peel, applied it to my face, and then turned on a fan that blew cool air toward my face. Initially, I found the smell of the chemicals to be highly invasive, and this distracted me from the slow burn I felt on my face. The burn was slightly irritating, but by no means unbearable. She then removed the peel and applied a gel-like mask to help replenish my skin. Following the facial I was told not to engage in any kind of activity that would make my face red (e.g exercise, steam shower, sun, etc.).

So in the end my skin felt fabulously soft and looked amazing, and really the pain I had to endure wasn't bad at all. I think I will continue with the anti-wrinkle facials on a 6 month basis (I usually go back to NY during Christmas and the summer) and hopefully they will prevent me from early aging. In the meantime, I may look into Julie's recommendation for at home care, Oil of Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion and Peel System.

Anyone else had an anti-wrinkle facial? What is your at home skin care routine like? I really need to step up my game and appreciate any insight and suggestions!

Trip Recap (or Why I Waffle About Moving Back to NY)

I am way too lazy and unmotivated to write a full post about my vacation, so I'm resorting to a bullet point recap. And I forgot my camera so I have no pictures to break up the bullets. Sorry!
  • Our first full day back we spent the afternoon following my dad while he played golf in the pro-am of the Dick's Open. It was nice to get outside and enjoy the sun, but walking four miles in flip flops really tired me out. I know my dad was happy we were able to watch him play, and I get to spend time with my mom and my grandparents, so it was a good way to start our vacation. Also of note, this was the first time AJ and I were out in the community of my hometown since being married, and a real small part of me missed the small town camaraderie and "who knows who" jabber that takes place between strangers. I also really enjoyed how cheap things were. This started my "we should move back to NY" thinking that took place most of the week.
  • On Thursday I played golf at the town country club with AJ, my brother, and my grandfather. It was hot as hell out, but we had a nice time and this again made me miss spending time with my family. After golf we had lunch in the club house and I spent most of the time looking out at the pool at all the moms with their kiddies. I think you know where this is going....
  • Later that night we had a barbecue at my aunt's house, and this kicked off the family reunion festivities. Not many people were in town yet, so it was mostly our immediate family and some of the sisters*. It was kind of lame, but I think that is mostly because my cousins invited all their friends from high school to come to the party too (why? I have no idea), and I felt 100 years old and like a chaperon. This made me not want to move back home....I don't get along with many people from high school.
  • Late Thursday night my BFF from high school (who also doubles as my college roommate and now my {younger} brother's hook up) met up with us and we had a couple drinks at a local bar. I love hanging out with my BFF, but it is kind of strange seeing her and my brother touching, holding hands, etc. This apparently first began at our wedding and has been on and off ever since. We shall see how his develops.
  • Friday morning my mom and I went to the spa while the boys golfed. It was nice to spend time with my mom and I love getting pampered, so this was definitely a highlight of our vacation. I got a traditional massage and an anti-wrinkle facial that included a chemical peel, and since a few of you showed interest when I mentioned the facial on twitter, I figured I would talk about it more in depth tomorrow. Stay tuned.
  • Friday night my parents had a clam bake at their house. AJ and I manned the cooker for the clams, which initially was not a great success. We put wayyy too many clams into the pot and had a hard time steaming them and fishing them out once they were done. Once we got it figured out though, we were clam cooking machines. We were cheating too and ate a few from each batch. Yum.
  • Saturday was the actual reunion, which was at a church hall in the middle of the afternoon. My dad hails from a ginormous Italian family. My grandmother has 7 sisters and the sisters have 857 kids resulting in 3290 grand kids. And now some grand kids are having kids, but I think there are only like 10 great grand kids. Okay, maybe some of those numbers are inflated, but there really are 7 sisters and there are so many cousins and second cousins that I have no idea how many there actually are. AJ and I have not been able to attend a reunion since being together as we used to live in NC and last summer we were getting married. We had some of the family at our wedding, but it was nice to see the people who didn't attend the wedding. AJ, my brother, mom, and cousins played Apples to Apples for like 3 hours. I am now obsessed with this game. I am heading to Target ASAP to buy this so we have it for all the parties we will have at our new house. And yes, our parties will involve board games, because we're old like that.
  • Saturday night we went to dinner with my parents and brother to one of my favorite Italian restaurants. Seriously, I cannot get enough Italian food when I am home. If there is one thing I hate about DC it is that there are very few authentic Italian restaurants.
  • Sunday we headed up to Ithaca to visit AJ's parents. AJ golfed with his dad while I hung out with his mom. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I was super uncomfortable the entire time. I hate to be the bitchy DIL, but we are just so different and we have nothing to talk about. I am also still desperate for approval, so I get nervous about being around her and that she is going to oust me from the family. AJ reassures me that it is just her personality and that she actually loves me, but when she constantly criticizes and makes me feel like a spoiled brat, I can't help but wonder. I was so glad when the guys were done golfing, and the rest of the night wasn't nearly as bad. AJ does a good job of appeasing any tension and is better equipped to deal with his parents. Not that they are crazy or anything ;)
So overall we had a great time in NY, but we were definitely busy. Throughout the vacation I waffled back and forth about whether I want to move back there, but I think in the end I like where we are in our lives now, and don't plan to move right after law school. After a few more years in DC we will have to reassess again and see where things will take us...

*The "sisters" refers to my grandmother and her 7 sisters. I feel like this makes them sound notorious, which now that I think about it, suits them.

Back from Vacay!

I'm back! I didn't plan to take a week off from blogging, but I'm not gonna lie....it was kind of nice to disconnect from the computer.

After a week in NY we are finally home in DC. Our vacation was nice, but not very relaxing; the entire week was full of parties and plans, so I am actually pretty tired and ready to relax this week before heading back to work on the 7th.

I have lots to blog about, but instead of being able to sit down and spend some time on the computer, I have to deal with insurance and a trip to the Toyota dealership today. No, my car troubles did not end here.

A quick synopsis...

We were driving on 95 N near Baltimore during rush hour in a middle lane, when all of a sudden we heard the loudest smack EVER. I was driving, as I had picked up AJ from work, so I looked in my rear view mirror to see if something hit us. Sure enough there was a black rectangular-like thing bouncing around in the road behind us. Because we were on 95 in the middle of a million cars, we couldn't exactly pull over to check out what happened. When we arrived at my parent's house a few hours later, we found this:

We are guessing we were hit by a stray piece of metal, probably a muffler. We called our insurance and they are going to pay for the entire bill, which will likely include a new driver side door because this doesn't look repairable to me...

We are soooo thankful it didn't hit my tire, or the window, or the windshield, because we could have been seriously injured. We are also shocked that I didn't lose control of the car. But still, this sucks!

I'll blog more about my trip later today, or tomorrow, so stay tuned for happier posts. And because I was gone for a week and I subscribe to a million blogs, I think I am going to have to click "mark all as read". Sorry!! If something exciting, important, or read worthy happened, please let me know so that I can read your posts!

20SB: Looking Back

This post is a part of 20SB’s Looking Back Blog Carnival, and Ben & Jerry’s is awarding free ice cream to lucky bloggers and readers! For more information, including how to participate, click here.

I've been at a loss for interesting blog topics lately, but lucky for me, and all the other blocked bloggers out there, 20 Something Bloggers is having a Blogger Carnival! The topic is "Looking Back" and they want to see what we were like back when we first started blogging. So before I reflect on how I've changed since I first began blogging, let's look at a post from April 24th, 2008, only the 5th post I EVER wrote.

Blog Social Skills

My secretary at DSS left my calendar open today so that I would have plenty of time to pack up my stuff, say goodbye to all my tutees, and catch up on the last minute office gossip. Most of my day was spent on the latter, but I still ended up having a lot of free time this afternoon. After finally posting again, I got sucked into the blog world and spent most of the afternoon browsing others' blogs. Two hours later......I found some I like, commented, and have added a link to them on my page.

But, now I feel awkward.....

I guess it's because I don't know the blog world social etiquette. Is it weird to comment on someone's blog if you don't know them? Should I introduce myself before declaring that I'm a "reader"? What are the rules, what are the rules!?!?*

I suppose it sounds pretty stupid, but I feel like I'm back in 8th grade and I'm the new girl at school who is trying to make some friends. It especially hits home since I am moving to a new city in two weeks! I guess I feel like it is strange to try and make (blog)friends because I have always had the convenience of a surefire network of potential friends (i.e. first college roommate, cheer team, grad program, etc.) and this is more open/unrestricted and also carries the possibility of rejection. Does that make sense?

I think this is a nice description of the situ:

Ultimately, I'm sure it's no big deal and people would be flattered to know I find their writing interesting, but until I am comfortable as a blogger, I will fret about my blog social skills!

BTW, I love someecards. They are hysterical and often speak to me!

*Does that phrase remind anyone else of the Betty Crocker commercial where the kid flips out that Santa is going to leave because someone ate the cookies? LOVE THAT COMMERCIAL

_____________________________________

And we're back to present blogger time. Now that you've peeked into my past, I hope we can still be friends.

Obviously I was a scaredy cat when I first started blogging and had no idea how things worked. I have come a long way since then, commenting on hundreds of blogs and reading many, many more. I have also made some amazing friends along the way and am so glad I stuck with blogging, commented, added people to my blog roll, and got out and met up with bloggers once I arrived in DC. With the exception of a few people (and my husband's friends), ALL of the people that I spend time with on a regular basis I have met through blogging. And I couldn't be more grateful for them.

I chose to revisit this particular post because I am sure there are new bloggers out there that may be feeling the same way I did way back when. Even if this post only helps one person realize that they are not alone and that they should stick with blogging, I'll be happy.

Schooooool's Out For Summer

Okay, school in my district actually ended on Thursday, but today is the first day of MY summer. I stayed up until 1 in the morning last night and slept in until 10 today. Heaven!

The sad part is I don't get off the entire summer, but hey, at least I get a small break, right? I have off until July 7th, and then I go back to work for all Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in July. I have off again the first week of August and then go back for good on August 11th. Why the crazy schedule, you ask? I have to work 15 days over the summer, but I get to choose which days. Most people choose to take off the entire month of July, but since AJ is working all summer, I decided to take off the weeks at the beginning and end of summer and work in the middle. This allows us to head back to NY this week and maybe take a beach trip in August. Plus, a three day work week isn't bad.

So, first up in my summer plans.....

We are heading back to NY tomorrow to visit our families and attend my dad's family reunion. We've got a lot planned over the next week so hopefully I will get a chance to blog while we're away. In between the multiple family gatherings I am hoping to get some sun, play some golf, read The Beach House by Jane Green and The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and maybe squeeze in a few runs. Gotta love vacation!

Gap and Brand About Town

While drafting this post I noticed that Miss Heidi already wrote about meeting with Brand About Town rep Justine and talked about the meeting that a bunch of bloggers in DC (and other cities around the country) got to have. Let me break it down real quick.

Gap is about to start a new marketing program and a bunch of bloggers are going to be chosen to try out and review their new line of jeans. If picked, we get to throw a party for our friends so that we can experience the jeans before they hit stores in August. Justine emailed me to meet with her about potentially being one of those people. How fun is that?

We met at a coffee shop in DC, and after talking with Justine about her marketing company, the campaign, and my blog, she took me to the Gap to buy a new outfit. What an awesome surprise! Last night I finally got to wear my new outfit, so of course I wanted to share it all with you!

Since you can't see the details of the two pieces in this picture, I had my darling husband take some close-ups.

The collar on this shirt actually lies flat so I clipped it with two bobby pins to add some fluff.

I paired the top and shorts with my favorite pair of gray Nine West heels. It is so rare for me to not wear a dress when I go out in the summer, but I think this outfit was the perfect way to branch out.

Thank you Brand About Town and Gap for this awesome opportunity!

I Think I'm in Love

Today I wore the Maggy London dress AJ bought me for my birthday. I think I'm in love. With the dress. I know I'm in love with my husband.

Excuse the wrinkles, this was taken after work

The best part? It has pockets. I think I've found something new to collect.

Blogger FAIL

My last two posts haven't shown up in google reader. Anyone know how to fix this? The first one I posted 24 hours ago.

Ugh! I need a tech savy friend.

EDITED TO ADD:

From nitecruzr, someone who responded to my cry for help....

Feeds, like other components in custom domain published blogs, are affected by the BlogSpot URL redirect problem.

Ahh, so apparently custom blog addresses aren't working and blogspot addresses aren't redirecting like they normally do. BOOO!

Hopefully this will all be fixed soon! If you still have my old blogspot address in your reader, then the posts will not show up. Please update your reader with my new domain:

Baby on the Brain?

Is it weird that the only thing I want from the kate spade sample sale is this bag?

Yes, it is a baby bag.

And I can't decide if I like it just because I am fond of backpacks or because I secretly want a baby.

Southern Moment

After reading about Susan in the South winning a Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka porch party, I immediately started craving a spiked Arnold Palmer.

I asked AJ to pick up a bottle on the way home from work and soon enough I will have a glass in my hand. What's for dinner, you ask? Fried chicken, mac and cheese, and green beans. Sounds AMAZING right about now.

Maybe I should move back to the south.

Jury Duty

I'm halfway through my day of jury duty. I keep waffling about whether or not it is pure torture. Since I've got lots of time on my hands, let's go over a day in the courthouse....

I did not have to report to the courthouse until 10:30 am, which meant I got to sleep in AND take my sweet time getting ready this morning. Conclusion: Sweet.

When I first arrived, I waited in line for almost 30 minutes in the rain just to go through security and get in the building. My beautifully straightened hair became a frizz nest. My blood was boiling. Once inside I calmed down again...that is until I reached the end of another ginormous line, this time to get checked in as a juror. Luckily I only had to wait about 20 minutes. Still though, that is a lot of waiting in line, so my day certainly did not start off well. Conclusion: Torture.

I then headed into the Juror Lounge, which basically looks like the cabin of an airplane, or perhaps a long lecture hall. Rows of seats, an aisle in the middle, a lectern in front, and multiple TV's hanging from the ceiling. The chairs are semi-comfy, they play movies, and best of all, there is wi-fi. I checked ahead of time and came prepared with my MacBook. I have cleaned out my reader, updated my blog roll, and answered lots of emails. Conclusion: Pretty Sweet.

They have called two panels so far, and I am not on either of them. Conclusion: Awesome.

We were released for lunch at 1pm. I usually don't get a chance to eat lunch, so an entire hour is a big deal for me. I headed across the street to Cosi, along with 100 other jurors. I waited a long time for my salad (good thing we had an hour) and then had to sit on a window ledge because there were no seats. I would have walked back to the courthouse and eaten there, but I couldn't carry my bag, my salad, my iced tea, and my umbrella without wiping out and/or spilling something. On a happy note, my salad was yummy. Conclusion: Not Fun.

After I returned from lunch, I got a seat at one of the two tables at the front. Working at a table is so much nicer than burning my legs with my laptop. I've got a window behind me, so no one is reading over my shoulder while I type, and although it is crappy out, at least I get a view of the outside world. Also of importance...I am blogging during the day, which is a rare occurance given my job. Oh, and I just realized I have my iPod earbuds in my bag and that I can listen to Pandora. Conclusion: Score.

The panel announcer man just came in and released us all! At 2:30pm. I didn't get called AND I don't have to come back for two years. Conclusion: YAYAY!

Blog Roll

Yesterday I realized that my blog roll disappeared when I bought my own domain and blogger moved my site to the new address. I want to link to all the awesome blogs out there, so if you want to be included, please let me know! Also, if you are a DC blogger, can you note that too. Thanks!!

Memories

My brother is in town for a few days; he has an interview at some place in DC (I am an awesome sister and clearly know all the details). He is crashing on our couch because he recently graduated college and my parents would rather us be all holed up in our teeny, tiny apartment than pay for a hotel. Our mom did send money for our dinner last night, so I guess that makes it okay.

Anyway, we all headed out for some drinks tonight after work. To preface the scene at the bar, let me just tell you that my brother may or may not be the biggest smart ass in the entire world. He always has a witty comment and is quick to make judgments on anything and everything anyone says and/or does.

With that said, I cannot remember ONE THING that I wanted to blog about. He literally said 923597 things that were blog worthy, and hear I sit not recalling one of them. Why does this always happen? I guess I am getting old and need to start writing all the funny stuff down. Welcome to my mid-twenties?

Amusement Parks Aren't Just for Kids

Yesterday my husband and I headed out to the 'burbs for a trip to Six Flags America. The other day the Six Flags twitter-er was offering tickets for 10 dollars, so I jumped on the opportunity and bought us two tickets.

We arrived right when the park opened at 10:30 am and had a blast riding all the roller coasters. The best part...there weren't ANY lines. We were literally hopping on one ride after another with very little time in between. In fact, AJ had to sit down and relax after a while because his stomach got a little queasy. Poor guy. I could have kept going all day!

My favorite ride was the Joker's Jinx, one of the many roller coasters in Gotham City. The train launches from the station and hits 60 mph in under 3 seconds. Talk about starting things off on the right foot! Because the lines were non-existent, we got to ride this coaster twice.

After breaking for lunch, we changed into our swimsuits and hit up the water park. We rode all the waterslides, took a brief dip in the wave pool, and then headed back to DC in the late afternoon.

Ahh, it was so fun pretending to be a kid again!

Birthday Delivery!

I just received a birthday package in the mail from my parents!

Inside the box were:

Gap tank tops in assorted colors:

A maxi dress from Express:

The coolest flip flops EVER:

Actually, they are called SwitchFlops and the straps are interchangeable. The flip flop has velcro on the strap, so they can easily be changed depending on your outfit. How fun is that?

Two additional straps:

They also sent two mini frying pans, a gift card to Olive Garden (from my brother), some treats and a bone for Kona, and a Gap button down shirt for AJ. We wouldn't want anyone to be jealous of all my gifts ;)

Thanks mom and dad!

All About Us

Since our 1 year anniversary is fast approaching, I thought it was the perfect time to steal this fun relationship meme from Ms. Mindless, Ashley, and Mrs. Crab.

1. What are your middle names?
Ann and James. However, I changed my middle name to my maiden name after getting married.

2. How long have you been together?
A little over 3 years.

3. How long did you know each other before you started dating?
We started dating right after we met. For a more in depth post about how we met, click here.

4. Who asked whom out?
Well, the first time we officially hung out, he asked me, but that wasn't really a date. It was more a gathering of people in a bar. I guess our first real date would be my cheer formal, and I kind of asked him to go with me. It's actually a funny story. One night our team was having a party at the cheer house and he had come to hang out with me. All the girls on my team knew I wanted to ask him to formal that night, but I was waiting to build up the courage to ask him. Well, of course one of the other cheerleaders asked if he was going with me before I had asked him. He looked at me and said something along the lines of "I don't know, do you want me to go with you." So then I was like, "Yeah, do you want to go?" It was really funny. We still joke that I "kinda sorta" asked him out.

5. How old are each of you?
I just turned 24 on Wednesday and he is 25.

6. Whose siblings do you see the most?
Definitely mine. I have only met Alson's sister twice. She lives in California.

7. Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
Law school. It is so stressful for him because, well, it is law school. He wants so badly to do well and make me proud and I know he puts a lot of pressure on himself.

8. Did you go to the same school?
Yes, we went to the same college.

9. Who is smarter?
We are both smart in our own ways.

10. Who is the most sensitive?
Hmm. Depends on the situation. But, the majority of the time, probably me.

11. Where do you eat out most as a couple?
We go to many different places since there is an endless number of restaurants in DC, but we probably frequent the diner on the corner most often.

12. Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Well, we went to California to visit his family a few Christmases ago and we went to St. Lucia on our honeymoon. Not sure which is further? Actually, I just googled it. From Raleigh to LA it is 2236 miles. From DC to St. Lucia it is 1981 miles.

13. Who has the craziest exes?
Neither of us, I guess. We have had no ex problems.

14. Who has the worst temper?
Me. I get so fired up about the littlest things.

15. Who does the cooking?
When we eat in, I cook and he cleans. But I hate grocery shopping and he hates doing the dishes, so I don't cook often.

16. Who is the neat-freak?
We both like to be neat, but rarely are neat. We blame it on the size of our apartment.

17. Who is more stubborn?
Me. I like things my way.

18. Who hogs the bed?
Kona

19. Who wakes up earlier?
He does. I am not a morning person whatsoever.

20. Where was your first date?
Like I said before, I guess our first date was my cheer formal. But, our first solo date was at my favorite Italian restaurant in NY, Little Venice. We have the food shipped to us on special occasions. It is SO yummy.

21. Who is more jealous?
Neither of us. This is actually one of the reasons I fell in love with him. He makes me feel like the most important girl in the world and I never get jealous.

22. How long did it take to get serious?
Days. We were engaged after three months of dating!

23. Who eats more?
Definitely him.

24. Who's better with the computer?
Him. When he asks me when I last defragmented my hard drive, I stare blankly.

25. Who drives when you are together?
Now that we live in the city and I am the one driving on a regular basis, I tend to drive if it is somewhere within the city. On long trips and when back in NY, he drives.

Happy Birthday to Me!

It's my birthday!

I awoke to Eggos and a juice box in bed and flowers on the dining room table. What a great way to start the day!

Inappropriate for School

Tomorrow I have meetings scheduled for the entire day. When I had a day of meetings at this school last month, only one meeting actually took place. If the parents/guardians don't show up, then we can't have the meeting.

I am betting tomorrow will be like last month, particularly because it is the end of the school year. Normally when I have meeting days like this I catch up on report writing. But, because it is the end of the school year, I am not behind on my reports. So needless to say, I will be doing a lot of sitting around tomorrow.

One of my coworkers told me she brings a book to read during the down time. What a great idea! Unfortunately, I am currently reading Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte. I am pretty sure I don't want to bring this book into school tomorrow.

I guess I better get reading tonight so I can bring a more school appropriate book into work tomorrow.

Hair Woahs

Friday afternoon I went to get my haircut. Prior to arriving at the salon I couldn't decide if I just wanted a trim or if I wanted to cut it short.

I go through phases where I get sick of my hair and want something different. I used to change things up with color, but now that I have a real job, it doesn't seem appropriate to show up to work with jet black or bleach blond hair. Yes, I've had both.

Anyway, two seconds after sitting down at my stylist's station, he informed me that my hair looked terrible and I would look much better if I cut off the length. Well, okay then. I guess, we'll go short.

For comparison purposes, here is a recent picture where you can see the general length of my hair prior to getting it cut.

Graduation dinner in Georgetown

And here is what my hair looked like after the cut. I HATED IT. I felt like a 40 year old living in 1974. I balled my eyes out when I arrived home.

Now you know what I look like when I am unhappy and sans make-up.

I hate the one side of layers and I feel like the length is uneven. Ugh! I know I could go back and have the guy fix it, but I do not want him touching my hair again. I also don't want someone else to fix it, which would involve cutting it shorter, because now I am an anti-short hair and want it to grow back ASAP.

I have been flat ironing my hair to try and make myself semi-presentable, and I don't hate it as much as I did on Friday, but despite my smile, I am still not happy.

Two summers ago I cut my hair and I LOVED it. I think this was a couple weeks after the initial cut, but it was the shortest I had gone in a long time. And I had no cutter's remorse at all. I wish it looked like this again!

August 2007. Pretty, short hair.

Looking back at this picture, it makes me think that cutting my hair a little bit shorter might make it look better. I guess my major problem with my current hair cut is that it looks like it is "growing out". Does that make sense? Oh, I know. It has no style. Ugghh. I should have just gotten the trim!

TMI

I normally don't share things too nasty because I blush real easily, but I am at my wits end and need your help. Plus, it is TMI Thursday over at LiLu's blog, so I might as well tell you today. Here goes.

In terms of chewing the typical stuff, Kona may be the best dog in the world. She doesn't gnaw on shoes, or furniture, or anything else that other dogs normally sink their teeth into.

No, no. Kona's chew toy of choice is my underwear. And by underwear, I mean dirty underwear.

I can't even tell you how many pairs of underwear I have gone through in the last two plus years. I always put my dirty underwear in the laundry basket and we usually shut our bedroom door when we are gone, but alas, we sometimes run out of the house and forget. Or in the case of today, we leave the overflowing basket in the hallway with the great intention of this forcing us to do laundry. Plus, once a period of time elapses and no underwear are destroyed, we start to get lax and think maybe she won't do it anymore. I know, I know. Joke is on us. Or more specifically, me.

So what inevitably happens when the basket is accessible? Kona tips it over and goes to town on my dirty underwear.

Today, after I came home and saw all the clothes on the floor, I decided I needed to do the laundry so I could find the destroyed pairs and broadcast them to the internet. Don't worry, I washed them before photographing the evidence. Oh, and excuse my granny panties. I prefer full coverage when wearing skirts and dresses.

Snippet of My Crazy, Random Life

Yesterday I was driving between schools, when all of a sudden my air conditioner stopped working. It was blowing hot air and the light on the knob was flashing. Since it was almost 90 degrees yesterday, this was quite an issue. I rolled down the windows to try and cool down, at which point I started hearing this awful sound coming from my car. A few minutes later I realized that when I braked (?) my oil light came on.

The combination of malfunctions made me nervous so I stopped at the Midas near one of my schools. I normally go there to get my oil changed; in fact I was just there last week. I told the guys what was going on, and one of the mechanics took my car out for a spin. I waited patiently in the waiting area, but I was pretty sure it was taking longer than normal for the test drive. After about 30 minutes the guy finally returned.

Next thing I know they were pulling me into the garage and had me under the car to show me the steady flow of oil that was leaking. The mechanic told me that he had to stop at his house down the street and put oil in the car because he wouldn't have been able to make it back to the shop without blowing the engine. AWESOME. They said they couldn't fix it, it wasn't related to my oil change last week, and that I should call to have it towed to the nearest Toyota dealership. The best part...they didn't charge me a dime. I will be dropping by later this week with some coffee because I really appreciate their help!

I called AAA and they had a guy out to tow me away in less than 15 minutes. I rode with him to the Toyota dealership and only had to pay him $4 for the entire trip. AAA is so worth the money! Here is my poor car on the tow truck.

After explaining the issues to the service consultant, he stopped me and said he had another V6 Camry in that morning with the same problem. Apparently there is some tube that has been rupturing on these kinds of cars (yay, factory warranty!). He said it would take a few days to fix it, that I would have to leave the car, and he would get me a rental. The next thing I know I am walking across the parking lot to Enterprise and picking up a rental car. The only problem...they didn't have any cars available and I was stuck with a van. I about died. I have ALWAYS said I will never drive a van.

Well, never say never right? Here is my van in all its soccer mom glory.

All of this literally happened within a two hour time frame. Nothing in DC happens this fast! It was so crazy. But, because we live in the city and you have to have a permit to park on the street, I had to stop at the DMV on the way home and pick up a rental car parking permit. This took about as long as the entire car breakdown/tow/rental process. Ugh, the DMV! Why must you be the bane of everyone's existence.

Now, the funniest part about this whole experience...I can totally see myself driving a van one day. If I have kids, of course. There is so much space! And the convenience features are out of control. Mirrors built in so you can see the kiddies in the back, automatic sliding doors, more cup holders than I would know what to do with, etc., etc.... We would definitely have to be in the 'burbs though, because parallel parking that thing on the street was almost a catastrophe.

What are your thoughts on the van? Will you have one someday? Seriously, my 17 year old self is dying right now.

Surprise!

This weekend we traveled up to NY to surprise my dad with a 50th birthday party. My mom planned a dinner cruise on Skaneateles Lake with our family and some of my dad's friends. We had a great time and it ended up being an awesome, quick get away for AJ and I.

The day began with my dad, brother, and two of my dad's friends from work golfing at a course near Syracuse. My mom and the other wives then surprised them at a restaurant in town and told him that the 7 of them were going to take the dinner cruise and spend the night on the lake. We arrived on Saturday afternoon shortly after they sat down for a late lunch. My dad was so excited to see us and literally jumped out of his seat!

We then spent the afternoon in my parents hotel room and on their balcony. This is where all the fun started! My dad's secretary and her husband were in the room next store and he almost saw them when we were hanging out on the balcony. People started arriving and had to be shooed away because they were going to ruin the surprise! It was so funny. Here we are hanging out on the balcony. Note our attire. It was only 60 degrees on the lake! Gah, I do not miss NY weather!

We then headed down to our hotel room to get ready, when we ran into some family. They were all hiding out in another hotel room!

Here is my dad when we are heading towards the boat and he realizes all his family and friends are in town! I am so glad the surprise party was a success!

Being on the water was amazing, and luckily it wasn't too chilly on most parts of the boat. I still had to wear a sweater over my dress, but at least I wasn't freezing the entire time.

One of my college roommates is from Skaneateles, so she and her boyfriend met up with us after the cruise. It was so great to catch up and spend time with her! I always forget how much I miss my friends until we are reunited again. I love that we can fall right back into place after not seeing each other for almost a year.

Obviously, I had a great weekend and I hope you all did too!

Funk

It has just been one of those weeks (okay, two days).

I try to stay positive on my blog, no one likes a Debbie Downer, so if I am absent for a few days, you'll know why. I am hoping for some big news in the next few days, so hopefully that will bring me out of the funk!

Until then.....

Weekend Recap

What a long, crazy weekend it has been. And I mean that in a good way! I'll try to break up my recap with some pictures. Unfortunately, they are all from my phone camera, so the quality isn't too great...

Friday night started with a drink on a restaurant patio with my darling husband. Our place of choice was a restaurant/bar that serves liquor in a glass with the mixer on the side. Dangerous!

We then split up so he could watch the hockey game with some friends and I could drink wine with PP&MS and Wearing Mascara on a rooftop in DC. After the game was over, AJ met up with us (as did WM's boyfriend) and we all headed out to a bar where we danced the night away. Literally. I haven't danced that much since our reception. I used to be a dancing queen, but hadn't been in the right place or under the right circumstances to break out my moves. Thank goodness for these girls! It was such a blast.

On Saturday we had brunch with WM & her boyfriend before heading home and napping for a few hours. Boy was it nice to get the needed rest! We were planning to hit up a public pool, but ended up not making it over there. Maybe another weekend? Saturday night was low key, we spent most of the night watching movies and clips on hulu. Neither of us can get enough of Justin Timberlake on SNL. Hilarious!

We started Sunday off with a trip to Starbucks (with Kona in tow) and sat outside to enjoy the sunshine. I am loving the $2 iced coffee with milk. In the last couple months I have started drinking coffee on the weekends. I still refuse to drink it on a daily basis, but I am finding that I don't mind the taste as much as I used to. With two splendas, it almost tastes like a flavored latte.

Later in the afternoon we headed out to Arlington to watch the hockey game with some of Alson's friends. The host lives in a high rise in Rosslyn and a small part of me now wants to move into a building like his. I was glad that we spent the entire time on the top floor, which had a huge party room, patio, and a pool. Unfortunately the weather started getting icky, so we didn't spend much time outside. Instead, we watched the game and ate lunch/dinner in the party room. Look at the view!

Today we headed to Georgetown for lunch at Old Glory, a barbecue place that offers sauces from five different regions, including our old stomping ground in North Carolina. Our food was yummy and I would definitely go back. The cornbread and honey butter they bring in the beginning was so delicious. I honestly would eat another basket of it if it was placed in front of me right now. Plus, they give you tootsie pops with the check. Sweet!

After lunch we headed down to the waterfront. It was so hot, so we quickly wandered back to our car and headed home. Luckily it was just in time, as the rain and a storm passed through shortly after we arrived home. The rest of the afternoon was spent reading (I finally finished The Associate), eating dinner (remind me to tell you all about spiedies one day), and snuggling with our puppy. Right now we are watching American Gangster, but it is a little too violent for my taste....hence blogging instead of focusing on the movie.

And one last picture to end the long weekend....

Who doesn't love snuggling with a sleeping puppy?!

Bring on the Summer Scents

Earlier this week, my husband (or my mother?) put an air freshener in the bathroom. That would be totally fine if it was this scent:

Instead, they put an Apple Cinnamon scented air freshener in the bathroom. HELLLLOO, it is almost summer, not fall or winter. I don't like olfactory dissonance!

Random Question

Although we live in DC, I have found over the last year that our neighborhood is pretty small. Well, not small in terms of size, but small in that I see a lot of the same people frequently.

So my question is....

Am I hyper vigilant? Do I only notice people because I am a psychologist and I am trained to be observant? Okay, I guess that is two questions. But you get the idea, right?

Sometimes I wonder if people notice me too and if I should say hi. Do you notice things like this? What are your thoughts?

Recharge for the Weekend

I opted to stay home tonight while my husband headed to a party with his law school friends. We have been out EVERY night this week and I need my body to recharge before a busy weekend. I wanted to go to the party, but my desire to lounge in my pjs, snuggle with my puppy, and finally watch the RHNYC reunion and RHNJ premier won out. I am also knee deep in The Associate by John Grisham and wanted to read a few more chapters tonight. I am loving the book and pick it up at every free moment. It will be a very relaxing night!

As for our busy weekend, my parents and brother will arrive tomorrow and we have a lot of celebrating to do! We've got my graduation, my brother's college graduation, my dad's 50th birthday, mother's day, and AJ's completion of 1L. A little something for everyone!

What are your weekend plans?

Really??

I briefly glanced at the headline of this article on people.com when the following conversation ensued....

Me: What! Sarah Jessica Parker is pregnant with twins?!
AJ: No, a surrogate is pregnant with her twins.
Me: Ummmm, how do you know this, but I don't?
AJ: I'm not working or doing anything all day. I know these things now!

OMG. Luckily he starts his summer job on Monday!

Snippet of Our Crazy, Random Life

Thank you so much for the sweet comments! Despite what the pictures portray, the weekend involved a few hiccups. They actually make for a pretty funny and totally random story, so I thought I would share it with you all.

With all the craziness that has been finishing grad school, working full time, and being the support system for a law student, the thought of reserving a hotel room the weekend of graduation slipped my mind. I guess the fact that I always stayed with my grad school BFF during my monthly trips to NC had me thinking I would just stay with her during our May meeting. Except...our May meeting was replaced with graduation, I would have my husband in tow, and her family would be staying at her apartment. Like I said, it all slipped my mind.

I finally realized that we needed a hotel room when I was down in NC for my April meeting. By this time, all the hotels were booked in the town where I went (woo hoo! past tense!) to school. Now, in case you don't know what it is like in some parts of North Carolina, let me explain. There are a couple major cities, a few smaller cities, and then the country. My school is in a small city, and the surrounding towns don't have hotels.

The next problem was that our neighbors that usually dog sit for us are on a cross country road trip, so they obviously were not available. In a world where money grows on trees, I would have boarded our dog at a local pet hotel, but I was not about to spend upwards of $100 for something in DC. So our next problem was that I had to find a dog friendly hotel.

We ended up getting a room at a motel about 25 miles east of my school. This quaint little town is on the coast, and we used to take day trips out there all the time when we lived in NC, so I was actually pretty excited. I was slightly concerned about the $50 a night price tag, but I chalked it up to small town goodness. And obviously we are poor graduate/law students, so we can't pass up a hotel room priced like that.

We arrive on Saturday afternoon around 12:30, and decide to stop in to the motel to see if we could maybe check in early. They had no problem with this, so I was really happy! At first sight, the motel looks like any other cheap hotel on the side of the highway. Certainly not a Hilton, but for a quick trip it would be fine!

We get to our room and it is also fine. We hang out and rest and watch TV on one of those old ginormous box TVs (I'm being such a flat screen snob, but it was pretty funny). It was 90+ on Saturday, so needless to say, we had the A/C pumping. We then shower, get ready, and head out. We leave the A/C on so that when we return later that night, the room will be nice and cool.

We go to graduation, head back to hotel town, have dinner by the river, pick up Kona, and decide that we should pick up some beer to drink in our room. We end up stopping at a convenience store and I run in to grab a six pack. While inside, I about die of smoke inhalation because all the clerks are smoking behind the register. Classic. As I approach the counter, I also notice that a good quarter of the store is full of wigs. Yes, wigs on those weird head stands. There were also boxes and boxes of hair extensions in plastic. We found the elusive random convenience store/wig shop! Seriously?

When we return to our room around 9 that night, the A/C is off, and the room is hot as hell. (Don't worry, we had left our dog at my professor's house during graduation and dinner, so Kona was not subjected to the lack of A/C in the room). AJ called the front desk and they immediately sent a maintenance man to come look at the A/C. After taking the thing apart, determining he needed to replace it, and leaving to go get the new A/C, he comes back and realizes that maybe we just blew a fuse. Hmm, okay. It took 20 minutes for you to figure that out? So he leaves the room for a few minutes and all of a sudden the A/C kicks back on. Problem solved.

We drink a few beers, watch Ace of Cakes, and try to fall asleep on an innerspring mattress. As I mentioned a while back, we bought a generic tempurpedic mattress to help our sleepless nights and solve our back problems. I knew that it was a great buy and that I really liked the new mattress, but after sleeping on an innerspring one for the first time since buying the mattress, I was reminded HOW much I LOVE our (generic) tempurpedic. I eventually put in ear plugs, because wouldn't you know, it also happened to be prom night in town. The $50 price tag was also appealing to the high school seniors. Ear plugs drowned out most of the sounds, but I still could hear doors slamming and our guard dog....Kona was not happy about the commotion and basically growled the entire night.

Then, around 4 o'clock AM the A/C stopped working again. I woke AJ up and made him call the front desk. The super helpful lady told us that the maintenance man doesn't come in until 7:30 AM. Oh okay, we will roast in our room until then. I was so pissed that I left the hotel room and began searching for the breaker. I found it by the stairs and flipped the switch. The A/C roared to life back in our hotel room, but by now, we were all awake.

Instead of doing the sensible thing and going back to sleep, we decided that we might as well leave. At 4:15 AM. We pack our bags, load up the car, and head to the front desk to check out. At this point we realize that we have no gas. We asked the super helpful lady at the front desk if she knew where a 24 hour gas station would be, but alas, she pointed us to a town 60 miles away. Riiight, because we could definitely make it there with 1/16th tank of gas. Luckily, we knew not to drive all the way to that town!

Anyway, we drive around town for a while, crying a little bit inside every time we pass a closed gas station. With the light flashing in AJ's face, we determine that the only way out of this mess is to drive the 25 miles back to the city where my school is located because they will have a 24 hour gas station. This is of course out of the way, but the 17 miles we would have had to travel on the country road to head back home were definitely not going to have a 24 hour gas station. We were also doubting that there would be any exits off the highway with a 24 hour gas station. I'm talking country! So detour we took! We finally find an open gas station, fill up, and head back home on a new route. Needless to say, it was a crazy 12 hours!!

Okay, I think that is enough of a snippet. I didn't mean for this post to be a small novel, but really the random things kept piling up. Luckily, AJ and I were good sports and just kept laughing and being delirious!

So we drive back to the city

Help Me, Please!

So as we all know, I am in the process of applying for jobs. This is the first time I have ever done this (well...for a "real" job), so I am kind of unsure of the process. Needless to say, I need your tips!

I applied for job #1 back in April, and was informed that I would be notified of the status of my application within 10 business days. I love a time line! On business day 10, they emailed me to say they wanted to set up a phone interview. I had the phone interview two days later, and was informed that I made it through to the next step, and that the central office would be in touch in 2-4 weeks to set up a panel interview. It has been almost 2 weeks, so should I wait it out or should I contact them at some point? If I do contact them, should I email or call? I don't have the email or number of anyone to contact, so I would probably email/call the HR office.

(These questions apply to the next two situations as well)

I applied for two other jobs at two different districts in the last two weeks. Neither district has any time line information on their website.

For job #2 I had to mail my stuff (resume & cover letter) to the psychological services office AND had to email the same stuff to the HR office. I did this on the 23rd. Is this long enough for them to process my application? Have they forgotten about me?

For job #3, I applied online two days ago. I know it is obviously really soon, but I am just wondering (again) at what point I should contact them.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Random Thoughts

Work is crazy. I graduate soon. No time to blog. Free time spent searching/applying for jobs. Yada yada yada. You've heard it all before.

Not only has my professional life been nuts, but I have been super social lately. Yay! At least things are looking up on this front. On Thursday night I went out with my husband and his law school friends. On Saturday I went to Gold Cup with Heidi and Madga. On Saturday night we had a brief alley party with our neighbors and then went to another party at Miss Pink Pearls and Muddy Sneakers' apartment. On Sunday I met up with PPMS to retrieve my forgotten phone and ended up spending a good two hours gabbing about lots of stuff at the cutest coffee shop. Last night I hung out with the other hockey wives at AJ's hockey game. Tonight some law school people are coming over to watch the Caps game. Look at me go!! I'm really happy that I have been making an effort to meet up with people and make new friends!

In other fun and exciting news....

For dinner tonight I made my childhood favorite, a casserole, which I frivolously named "Mashed Potato Surprise". My grandma started making this dish way back in the day; she found the recipe on the back of a Campbell's Vegetable Soup can. My parents think it is hilarious that I eat this dish, given my propensity for simple, basic, non-touching foods. Somehow, this was always the exception. It was so yummy and delicious, and the prefect comfort food for a long, rainy day. I love how small things like that can brighten any day!

Yesterday Alson had his last final of his 1L year! Congratulations to my amazing husband for surviving what was most certainly a difficult experience. Last night his class had a big celebration, and of course a few beers were had by all. If you've ever had or seen Molson Canadian, you know that they have silly labels on the back. Last night Alson had one that said:

Awake

Tonight my husband had a hockey game at 10:45 pm. I decided not to go because it was so late, but here I sit, fully awake because I am a wuss and can't sleep when he isn't here. The game will probably go until midnight, but then he will have to shower, drive back from Arlington, and drop a friend off on the way. I am guessing a 1 am return to our apartment. Boo!

Waking up bright and early may be an issue, it is already way past my bedtime!

Name the Boatman Geller Preppy Gator!

After receiving Boatman Geller stationery as a wedding present last July, I fell in love with the company and bought a ton of their stationery. I stocked up during the tent sale (which is going on again here) and gave sets of 10 cards tied up with a ribbon to a bunch of family members for Christmas and birthday presents. The stationery is great quality and makes an awesome gift! I also kept a fair share for myself and use it for all my hand written notes.

I also subscribe to their blog, which is how I found out that the Boatman Geller preppy alligator was being retired. Here is an excerpt from the post:

"Sadly, the Boatman Geller preppy alligator has raised some eyebrows with Lacoste and has been deemed to be somewhat confusing when comparing it to the Lacoste icon. Today, we're honoring the retirement of a well noted figure in the Boatman Geller Collections, the preppy alligator. "

I was so sad, because the preppy alligator was one of my favorites, but luckily the people at Boatman Geller alerted me that a new preppy alligator would be part of the collection soon.

Well ladies (and the few gentlemen that read my blog), that day has finally arrived! On behalf of Boatman Geller, I would like to introduce you to the new preppy alligator!!!

Yay! So exciting!

Now, if you notice, the birth announcement is not quite complete...

And that is where you come in!

Boatman Geller needs your help naming the new gator!

Leave me your best name suggestions in the comments for your chance for a special Boatman Geller alligator collection, including a box set, personalized notepads, wine tags, coasters, and luggage tags! This contest will be open until Sunday, April 26th. Also, you must include your email address along with your name suggestion to be considered. We will then review the suggestions, pick our top three favorites, and create a poll on the Boatman Geller Facebook page that will be used to determine the ultimate winner!

Pretty, New Things

After a long, taxing day at work (I am having a hard time transitioning back into work mode after an 11 day spring break), I came home to a nice surprise from Lauren Nicole Gifts.

The other night I read a Lauren Nicole Gifts blog post that said:

"I have a bunch of things that I want to give away (products that I took off of the website because I only have one left). The first TEN bloggers to leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite Easter memory was will get one of these items."

I just happened to be one of the first ten bloggers to respond and I am LOVING the sterling silver engraved pendant she sent me!

This picture doesn't do the pendant justice (the flash makes it look scratched and I think you can see my fingerprint, haha), but it is definitely beautiful in person. I especially love it because it's got my new* monogram.

Now, the good news for you is that Lauren Nicole Gifts is planning to do more "grab bag giveaways" each month for the next few months, so make sure you are subscribed to her blog!

Also, my friend Julie from Wearing Mascara has asked that I check to make sure all her readers know that she recently switched to WordPress. So....everyone make sure wearingmascara.com is showing up in your Google reader because Julie has moved!!

*At what point is this not my new monogram, but my actual monogram? Same as being a newlywed?

Rachel Zoe and My Marriage

Friday night we went to Arlington to see our wedding band play at RiRa, and as always, they rocked! They are such an amazing band and I am so happy to support them as they make the transition from cover band to tHE.DESIGN. If you are in North or South Carolina check their schedule to see if they are coming to a bar/venue near you! I believe this was their first trip north, and hopefully they will trek up here again and continue to get lots of exposure!

A late night out Friday combined with a rainy Saturday resulted in a lazy day on the couch. During my veg fest, I somehow got sucked into watching The Rachel Zoe Project marathon on Bravo. Throughout the bajillion episodes I watched, Rachel commented at least once per episode about how she put her work first and her time with her husband was limited. He also commented multiple times about how he never got to see his wife. I cannot imagine living like that, but I am also not a famous stylist that is building a brand and jet setting from NY to LA all the time.

However, even with Alson being in law school, we try to put our marriage ahead of everything. Some of the best advice he received was from a mentor while working at the firm in North Carolina: Treat law school like a full time job. He gets up early, studies before school, goes to all his classes (which for me is a given, but apparently for a lot of people, it is not), studies between classes instead of socializing and goofing around, and studies after class until dinner time. This gives us plenty of time together in the evening, and also allows him to time to decompress and gather strength and brain power for the next day. On the weekends he also gets up early and studies while I catch an extra couple hours of sleep. Throughout the day he continues to study, but we still spend a few hours together.

Now, finals time is a different story. If we can just have dinner together I will be happy.

I am not saying this particular schedule will work for everyone; the point is that spending time together is important to both of us and we work it into his daily schedule. Seeing a couple on TV struggle with this really opened my eyes to how lucky I am. Not that I am in any position to give Rachel Zoe advice, but it seems like they need to schedule in some QT every now and then. However, they HAVE been married 10 years, so what do I know?

Another thing that struck me was watching Rachel and her husband fight. Obviously all couples fight, but something about watching a real couple fight was informative (and yes, I know some people are skeptical about the authenticity of reality shows). I found myself thinking, I would say that or I would do that or I would do this differently, and I think it helped me to realize how I fight. I have been known to say things I don't mean, just to get a rise or reaction out of Alson. Not nice and I'm not proud. I am really trying hard to not do this anymore, and watching this couple fight and seeing both their perspectives (another thing I have trouble doing) I think was helpful.

Is that weird? I don't know what it was about them that I found relatable, but it was something! Have you seen a couple on TV or in real life fight that hit home? What, if anything, have you learned about your relationship from TV?

Following Sucks!

I have decided I do not like the "follow" feature of Blogger.

If you are following me, you may want to add me to a feed reader (if you would still like to read my blog, of course), because I think I am going to delete the following gadget on my blog....unless Blogger gets on the following issues (no pun intended).

First, I somehow keep following myself. When I see that I have new followers I click on the picture to see who they are and so I can read their blog too, and the next thing I know it says I am following "Always a Northerner". Hello Google Friend Connect or whatever you are, I AM Always a Northerner, why would I want to follow myself!?

After clicking around for a while I am usually able to stop following, but it is a tedious process because well, it is ME, and the program doesn't understand what I am trying to do. I also can't remember how to un-follow myself, so now I am trying to click around again and it's not working. Ugh!

Another problem I have found with following blogs....posts often end up in my reader twice. Once for the subscription I initially added into Google Reader and then once for following. I have tried deleting the original subscription, but that doesnt' seem to work, because certain blogs are still showing up twice.

Anyone else having these problems? Any solutions?

ETA: I received some great tips on following, so hopefully I can work out the kinks and keep the gadget. If not though, people will still be able to follow me, I just won't be following you. I will, however, add you to my reader, so don't worry, I will still keep up with all your blogs!

Recent Steals

While my parents were visiting this past weekend, Alson and my dad went golfing while my mom and I went shopping. After my trip to North Carolina last week, I realized that I needed a graduation dress, so my mom offered to buy one for me.

We headed to Ann Taylor Loft because there is one right near our apartment, and boy did I hit the jackpot. They were having an amazing sale, so one graduation dress turned into three, plus shoes, and a work outfit.

The dress that I am actually planning to wear to graduation is not on the ATL website, but once I shower and pull myself together (definitely by tomorrow), I will post a picture of THE dress. Here are the two other dresses I bought:

To make the dresses work appropriate, I also bought three of these adorable cardigans in white, ivory, and lime green. As other bloggers have noted, they are amazing!

When we first walked into the store we saw this skirt on a mannequin. My mom forced me to try it on, and with a simple white shirt and the lime cardigan, it looked awesome! I am hoping to wear this outfit on the first day of school (staying positive that I WILL find a job).

I pulled these shoes into the dressing room to assist in the trying on process and decided that they went with ALL the dresses and I had to buy them as well. I may even go back and buy the gold pair too....if they go on sale, I mean.

All in all it was a pretty great shopping trip. We got 30% off everything and I got double reward points for putting it on my ATL card. My mom hasn't spoiled me in a while, so I don't feel too bad. I will send her a nice thank you card this week as well.

In other recent purchase news....

This morning I got an email from BR saying they were having a 30% off all New Arrivals sale, so I figured I would just look and see if there was anything I HAD to have.

I found these cute capri's at the Gap and decided I needed two pairs, one in stone and one in chocolate brown. They will be perfect for work, and at $18 were a steal!

I also found this T-shirt dress at Gap, which will be perfect for summer work days. They have many other colors, but I decided on the blue. Very ocean-y.

And last, but not least.... I found this dress at BR on sale (so I couldn't get the 30% off, boo). I am planning to wear it to one of the many weddings I will be attending this summer. Can't wait!

ATL is having a 25% off all dresses sale and the ON/GAP/BR 30% off New Arrivals sale runs through tomorrow!

Lazy Day(s)

I am taking laziness to a whole new level.

I just changed out of the pajamas I have been wearing for two days and left my apartment for the first time since Sunday night. All this because I had to move my car to the other side of the street. Granted, I probably didn't need to change out of my jammies, but I was starting to feel a little gross. Hopefully a shower is in my future. Then I can actually leave the house and not feel the need to run out and back in as fast as possible.

At least I was a little bit productive this morning.... I finally sat down and edited the wedding album layout my photographer sent me back in December. Maybe we will have the actual album in time for our one year anniversary!

Other than that, in the past two days the only thing I have done is watch TV, read blogs, snuggle with Kona (and Alson when he is home), and eat. And to be honest, it feels AMAZING.

Sometimes I just need it, ya know?

Winner!

Happy Monday! I am on spring break this week so I will either be a posting fanatic or lazy and MIA. A lot has happened since my last post (both good and bad) and I have a great deal on my mind, but before I go into any detail about my weekend, I want to let you all know who won my giveaway.

I wrote names on pieces of paper, cut them up, and placed them in a bowl.

Excuse my poor handwriting. The Tucker Blair needlepoint headband goes to....

Little Pink Magnolia!

Congratulations! Thank you to Taylor at Tucker Blair for making this giveaway possible! Taylor is always offering great deals and coupon codes, so be sure to follow their blog and tweets.

Random School Related Thoughts

  • Tomorrow I head down to North Carolina for my last internship meeting before graduation. Wooo hooooo!
  • I have printed three copies of my thesis, will have them bound and delivered to the appropriate places, and will wash my hands of the project that ruled my life for almost THREE years. Boy, will that feel amazing! This is what our dining room table currently looks like:
  • Checklists, and forms, and papers galore! I also can't wait to get rid of the stacks of articles that have littered our apartment since August, 2006. Seriously, I never thought this day would come!
  • On a nostalgic note...I am so close to being done with graduate school that it is starting to dawn on me that my academic life is over (unless I decide to go back and get my Ph.D., of course). It is so weird, considering I have been in school since I was 5.
  • Yesterday I had to observe a student I am currently testing, so I attended his 9th grade English class. When I walked in I was reminded of that Matthew Perry movie that was on TNT a couple years ago. Anyway, the class is reading To Kill a Mockingbird, so during the first 20 minutes the class took a reading quiz. Half the kids didn't even take out paper. They had no problem telling the teacher they didn't read and they didn't care of they got a zero. So sad. But on the bright side, it spurred memories of the book, even though I couldn't answer all of the questions. This reminded me that I want to go back and read all the classic high school books. The second part of the class was a lesson on prepositions and the infinitive. This reminded me that I need to work on my grammar.
Sorry for the randomness! Hopefully I will be back to normal posting after I return from my trip south. Until then, make sure you enter my giveaway!

City or Suburb?

We just extended our lease for another 3 months. Our current lease is up the weekend of my graduation, but we don't really know what is going to happen in the coming months (I still don't have a job lined up), so we didn't want to say for sure whether we were staying in our apartment for another year or not. If I do get a job around here, I would like to live relatively close to my schools to help cut down my commute time. That is definitely priority #1. The other major thing we are considering....whether we want to stay in the city or not.

This weekend we attended a get together at a coworker's house. She lives in a suburb of Baltimore with her fiance in a brand new townhouse. Another one of my coworkers also lives in one of these new townhouses, but in southern Maryland. We attended a get together at coworker #2's place back in November. Spending time in their 3 bedroom, 2 and a half bath homes made me incredibly jealous. They have enormous closets, gourmet kitchens, huge bathrooms, and more closet square footage than our current apartment has in total square footage.

On the pro-city side, they both live pretty removed from everything, especially the girl in Charles County. My coworker that lives in Howard County is about 20 minutes away from downtown Baltimore, but still, kind of a hike. They both must drive to the city (or to a park and ride), so that is a big downside. Actually, they have to drive everywhere they want to go, even if it is just to the store or to dinner.

Yesterday Alson and I had dinner at one of the best restaurants in DC, a 4 minute walk from our apartment. We also spent the afternoon "people watching" in Dupont Circle. The nice weather brought out droves of people that have been stuck inside the entire winter. We saw a juggler, the famous chess players, a group of people dancing to music they were projecting through some serious speakers, as well as the city folk and tourists mingling near the fountain. I'm pretty sure there is nothing like that in 'burbs.

We love being able to walk to the farmer's market, amazing restaurants, bars, shopping, Alson's school, etc. But we also want more space. Such a dilemma!

City or suburb? What are other pros and cons of each?

Dress Lust

Boy, do I love Target! They have a bunch of pink, navy, and green clothes hidden in a back part of the women's section (at least they did at the store near my office). I spotted this dress yesterday and may need to go back and snag it before it is gone.

Luckily I have a $25 gift card, making this dress super affordable. I don't love the fabric, but for $40, it's not too bad.

Time Spent Wisely

I could waste hours a day watching YouTube. I'm sure many of you could as well. I usually get caught up in YouTube after someone posts a link to a video because, without hesitation, I subsequently click on any related videos that look interesting.

Last night I watched, among other things, Strange Kid Singing. A friend had posted it on Facebook, so of course, I clicked. It wasn't that funny, but it was so weird and bizarre that I wasted 3 mins and 29 secs of my life on it. And 3 and a half more this morning. Why, why, why!! I guess seeing people be weirder than me is comforting.

I have probably watched the Snuggie Rap, Kittens, David, and every SNL Digital Short song ever made....about 100 times. Okay, maybe not that many times, but I can definitely feel my brain rotting a little.

What videos are you loving right now?

An Annual Ugh

I have my annual exam this afternoon. Needless to say, I am dreading it! And to make matters worse, we don't have insurance (thank you internship & law school) so I have to go to Planned Parenthood. I hope there aren't any protesters around!

Ugh.

Epiphany

I had an interesting epiphany just now.

But first, the back story....

Tonight at midnight, Alson has an appellate brief due (whatever that is), so most of the weekend he has been working on that. On Friday night we had dinner with my mom and brother (they were driving back to NY after spending the week in NC for my brother's spring break), Saturday morning we had brunch before my mom and brother headed out, last night (and this morning) we watched Twilight, and today we went to the grocery store and the dog park. Other than that, the weekend was pretty uneventful, especially for me.

Alson is again working on his brief (final edits, yay!) so I, of course, was browsing Facebook in an attempt to entertain myself. While on Facebook, I was looking at a friend's pictures from the weekend. She was a year ahead of me in grad school, and we both worked in the same office for our assistantship, so we were friends and still keep in touch. She is a little bit older than me (she was a teacher for a bunch of years before going back to school), so I guess a little (or a lot) wiser. Her husband is in the army and is currently in Afghanistan or Iraq (I can't remember), but she by no means is sitting around at home all the time while her husband is away.

And this is when it hit me. Umm hello, why are you not out doing stuff!!! Just because Alson is stuck at home doing work doesn't mean I have to be stuck at home doing nothing. Granted, our situations are a little different, but essentially it boils down to a similar issue.

I guess part of the problem is rooted in our apartment being small, and doing work is kind of muddled with hanging out (even though I don't really distract him or anything) because he does his work in the living room, the only place we can be, unless we're in bed or the bathroom. It's like we are "hanging out" even when we aren't really. I think it would be different if he had an office to do work in, but alas, we don't. I dunno, does that make sense? Also, we are on a tight budget, so a lot of the things my friend goes out and does, we just don't have the money for right now.

Actually, these are just excuses. There are plenty of things that are cheap and/or free to do in DC, and we aren't hanging out when he is doing work because, well, he is doing work!

Moral of the story.....I am really going to try and make an effort to get out of the house and hang out with friends and do things I want to when Alson is busy with school.

Dress Lust

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring! I am ready to pack away my sweaters and cords and bust out my dresses and capris. It has been a long winter...or so it seems after spending the last two in North Carolina. We've had a few teases the past couple weeks, but hopefully the warm temperatures will stick around for good real soon.

And not only is flip flop weather around the corner, but wedding season is fast approaching! We have four weddings to attend in the coming months, so I have a bunch of dresses to buy. I am on a strict budget until I secure a job, so for now I will just window shop and share some finds.

I was browsing White House | Black Market earlier, when I saw this dress:

I have GOT to have it! I am not sure about wearing it to a wedding, maybe a little too much white?

Oh, and I also need her tan, pronto!

Bearcats!!

Go Bearcats! Beat Duke!

Bring On New Housewives

I secretly love the Real Housewives on Bravo. And I know a bunch of you do too. Guilty pleasure, right?

This season has been everything I've come to expect from the RH. Ridiculous, trashy, dramatic, etc., etc., etc.

And we won't have to worry when the NYC season ends.....a new group of over the top, not so real at all women will be "gracing" our TV's. The Real Housewives of New Jersey premieres right after the NYC finale on May 12th. The new series will showcase a bunch of strangely related women from Bergen County, a suburb of NYC. It has GOT to have some serious drama.

Who's excited?!?

Irish?

I am definitely Irish.

I've got the Irish eyes to prove it.

But, I hate corned beef and cabbage. What am I supposed to eat today? I guess potatoes?

Actually, I'm craving a Shamrock Shake. Naughty Irish girl!

No Talking, Please

Sometimes I like not talking.

It's kind of like a mood. A no-talking mood I guess.

This should not be confused with a no-communicating mood, however. When I am in a no-talking mood, I will still text (or g-chat, or BB messenger) others (usually Alson) to discuss what I don't feel like saying. Most times we are discussing things that aren't very important. For example, last night Alson and I were BB messenging about an episode of NCIS we were watching.

Me: Who is that guy?
Him: He works at the Pentagon.
Me: Oh yeah, now I remember.

Yes, it would probaby be quicker to just talk, but I don't want to. And Alson understands this. Back in college my roommates and I used to IM each other from across the room or hall instead of talking, so I guess I have a history of this behavior.

Does anyone else do this?

Tweet Tweet

Okay, I promise not to post any more today...after this.

I have finally joined Twitter! You can follow me at TheNortherner. I have already started following a few people, but if you're on it let me know so I can follow you!

One Time Grace

In an effort to reinstate some optimism in my life, I have decided to do a Grace in Small Things post that I have seen some bloggers (Heidi and Katie) do.

Here are a few things that I find grace in:

  • A loving husband who knows how to make me smile and laugh
  • The snuggliest puppy in the world
  • Fresh flowers on the dining room table
  • Homemade spaghetti that can be shipped to me
  • Graduating in less than two months
  • CSI marathons
  • Sweatpants (particularly at 2 pm)
  • Bearcat basketball
  • Enigma
  • Yankee Candles
Now I remember.... My life is good!

One More...Then I'm Dropping the Topic

Well I didn't get my ticket dropped. This whole situation has been a horrible experience and it makes me want to move away from DC and NEVER give them any money again. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I don't care. I'm allowing myself the rest of the afternoon to be angry and upset, and then I'm refusing to talk about the topic ever again. I will not let this ruin my weekend.

Virtual Vent

Remember that STUPID seat belt ticket I got forever ago? Well my day in court has finally arrived. Tomorrow morning I will argue that I did, in fact, have my seat belt on and thus, the ticket should be dropped. I will do this right after I interview at my current place of work.

Yes, that's right. Tomorrow I have an interview at 8:30 in the morning at the place where I already work (this seems asinine to me) and then must race to court (by 11 am) to fight the stupidest ticket on the face of the planet.

I tried to fanangle the dates, but work is only interviewing tomorrow and I could not get in touch with a real person to change the court date despite calling EVERY number on the DMV website when I found out these two events conflicted. I did get to change my interview time though. My slot was originally at 11:15 am, so I rescheduled for 3:30 pm (plenty of time to get back to work!), but then yesterday my secretary called to tell me that my supervisor needed to reschedule to 8:30 am because she had an afternoon meeting and wouldn't be able to interview me at that time. Ugh.

Did you know that tomorrow is Friday the 13th? Shoot me now.

I plan to be back to my cheery self tomorrow night (job or no job, ticket or no ticket).

We Clean up Nicely!

We've cleaned our apartment from top to bottom, folded the laundry, washed the dishes, bathed Kona, and tidied up everything that usually sits in the middle of the floor. I'm all ready for a girl's night!

And in the process, I really like our apartment again! I was feeling so cramped and crowded lately, and this really helped to open up our space. I should clean more often!

Now if only I could get rid of some clothes and make my closet feel big again...

Hair Clarification

I had a mixed emotions weekend. I won't go into great detail because I am trying not to dwell on the negative stuff, but my Friday involved a flat tire in NC, a massive traffic jam on 95N, and a burglar in our neighborhood (don't worry he didn't get us, but still very unsettling). Needless to say, Friday sucked! I was worried that I would be grump city for the rest of the weekend, but thank goodness I was not. The weather, in combination with a visit from a grad school friend and her fiance, a visit to the dog park, and some QT with my husband, made for fun times on Saturday and Sunday! Shortest weekend recap to date.

This afternoon I ventured downtown for haircut. My hair was getting pretty gross on the ends (I straighten it almost every day), so I figured I should get a nice cut before an interview I have this coming Friday. I just asked for a trim, so it isn't drastically different, but it's still a change.

When I came home I asked Alson what he thought and he replied "I like it, it's an adult haircut." As soon as he saw the look on my face he knew I didn't like that response, so since then he has been buttering me up.

But of course, the original comment is the only one I remember. An adult haircut? What exactly does that mean?

Can't Think...Too Tired

I was up at 5 this morning. Alson is on spring break and instead of sleeping in (my activity of choice when on vaca) he got up super early to go play pick-up hockey at the crack of dawn. I couldn't fall back asleep once he was gone (does anyone else have trouble sleeping when they are home alone?), so I layed in bed and read blogs on my phone. I love you all, but now I wish I got my sleep!

Super tired. Can't maintain coherent thoughts. My executive functioning = poor. Must go to bed. Earlier than my already geriatric bedtime. Okay, lights out.

P.S. I am headed to NC tomorrow for my third to last internship meeting. Two months until I graduate!! Wooooohooooooo!

Cable Woahs

This past week we finally subscribed to digital cable. No more stone age for us!

We were previously paying $18 a month for basic cable, but back when we moved in, the cable guy apparently didn't put a trap on our cord so we were actually getting a whole lot of cable for the cheaper price. I always thought our cable was super cheap, but didn't question it.

Anyway, Alson has been asking for HDTV since we first got our TV, so for his birthday my parents decided to indulge him with a year's subscription. When the cable guy came the other day, he realized the previous glitch and took all our good cable away. We didn't have TBS, TNT, USA, or Bravo, which are the four channels I watch on a regular basis. I wanted to die! Luckily my mom felt my pain (we love the same shows and channels) so my parents have agreed to pay for digital cable while we are both still in school and until I find a job. Thanks mom and dad, we love you! (Speaking of my parents, happy 25th anniversary!!)

I love being able to see what we are watching, all the On Demand options (including the 30 Day Shred! and a bunch of other awesome workouts), and the super clear picture.

The only problem with this lovely scenario....the GINORMOUS cable box that is misplaced in our small apartment. Our TV is hanging on the wall and we have a small shelf that holds our DVD player, Wii, and another electronic thing that switches between inputs (I don't know what it is called?), but the box didn't fit on that shelf. There is literally no other place for the box than on a side table in front of one of our bookcases, but it just looks so out of place! It is kind of stressing me out and makes me want to cancel the digital cable and go back to dark ages. Okay, not really, but it is annoying that it has to be so huge! Doesn't Comcast know this is DC and space is limited?? What gives!

Sick Puppy

I was hoping this weekend would be relaxing and lazy, but things did not go as planned. We spent Friday night at the vet emergency room because Kona was still sick and we were worried she was dehydrated and that her organs might fail. Taking her to an unfamiliar place and waiting for hours while she was in ICU was TERRIBLE, but I am glad we did because she had a bacterial infection and was, in fact, dehydrated. She is now on a bunch of meds and is getting special food (boiled chicken, rice, & cottage cheese), which she loves. Here she is after we got home early Saturday morning:

The rest of the weekend she was pretty lethargic and spent most of the time napping. She was still having some "leakage" (gross I know) so we decided to put a makeshift diaper on her. We cut up an old t-shirt (we cut a hole for her tail too) and it actually worked really well!

Hopefully she is on the way to full recovery. It only took a shot, some fluids, a few tests, and $400 dollars! We were SO worried about her, so really, we would have paid whatever to get her healthy again. I'm just glad she's okay :)

BTW, for those of you coming over next week, don't worry, we have washed our cushion covers and plan to deep clean before anyone steps foot in our home!

Storage and Sports

When my parents visited over Valentine's Day weekend they brought us our golf clubs.

When Alson's parents visited last weekend they brought his hockey bag, stick, and caddy.

Needless to say, our apartment is overflowing with sports equipment. Our golf clubs are framing our center window in our dining nook, the hockey caddy is in the middle of our clubs, and his hockey bag and sticks (we already had one here) are in the middle of our living room floor.

When we first moved here we kept our golf clubs in my trunk and then dropped them off at my parents house when we were up for Thanksgiving. Now that I am pretty much a testing machine (so many kids are referred for special education this time of year), I have 5 IQ test kits in my trunk and there really is no room for our clubs in there. Since the weather will soon be improving, we are hoping to hit up the driving range and play a few rounds in the coming months, thus the need for our clubs. As for the hockey equipment, we originally elected to not keep any of it in DC because he wasn't planning to play hockey this year. That all changed when a law school friend asked him to join an adult league.

I'm not sure where we will ultimately store all this stuff, but I know it's not going to be in plain sight! Despite the storage problem, I am excited to get swinging and know Alson is too. Here we are golfing on our honeymoon:

We weren't planning to play (I didn't even bring a polo shirt!), but couldn't pass up the course once we got there. Luckily there wasn't a strict dress code.

Any other golfers in the area?

Delivery!

My vineyard vines package just arrived! Alson surprised me with the cutest outfit:

Now I really can't wait for the weather to warm up!

Week Run Down

And another week has flown by...due partially to the birthdays, but also to a new mattress, mock trial, a visit from Alson's parents, puppy sickness, and Restaurant Week here in DC.

On Thursday afternoon our new mattress was delivered! We ordered a generic tempurpedic from Overstock.com after one to many sleepless nights on our old innerspring mattress. Haha, I sound like an infomercial. These kinds of mattresses don't need a box spring, but they require a platform style bed, so we headed out to our local hardware store for some 2 x 4's. After screwing 9 of them into our current bed frame we were ready for our first night of deep sleep. Over the past few nights I have gotten used to not sleeping in a "divot, or gully, or crater" (Alson's terms) and it is glorious. Definitely worth the money!

Taken before we nailed down the 2 x 4's...hence the box spring underneath.

On Saturday Alson participated in his law school's mock trial competition at the DC Courthouse. I was an expert witness for the prosecution, which required a lot of preparation on my part. On Wednesday night we had a scrimmage against another team and on Friday night we spent three hours going over the questions he was going to ask me and the answers I was supposed to give. I loved waking up at 7, sweating on the witness stand during cross examination, and being nervous for Alson in general. Okay, I may have minded a little, but the clothes he ordered from Vineyard Vines as "compensation" (I didn't ask for anything, he surprised me!) made it totally worth it. Plus, Alson looked pretty sexy all cleaned up in a suit!

Alson's parents came into town on Saturday afternoon (about an hour after we got back from mock trial and lunch with the defense) so the day just flew by. We spent the late afternoon hanging out and talking with his parents, then cleaned up and headed to Cafe Atlantico for an early birthday dinner. The food and service was amazing! I felt like I was on Top Chef.

We had brunch on Sunday at a restaurant around the corner and then Alson's parents treated us to some homemade pasta and pesto at the farmer's market. I will definitely be making some Italian this week! Alson also bought me some beautiful tulips from our favorite flower vendor. They are just starting to bloom and are giving me hope that spring is around the corner! His parents then headed to a museum, so we went home, built a fire and took a breather for a couple hours. Before they headed back to NY they stopped by one last time to drop off Alson's hockey bag (more about this in another post) and left us with some NY apples, wine, and healthy snacks. Yum!

We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging on the couch watching the Capitals and some golf (birthday boy got to control the remote). About a half an hour before we were about to get ready for dinner, Kona got sick for the third time this weekend. We finally took to Google and found out that she was just hungry! She pretty much hasn't eaten since my parents left last weekend. Maybe because she was swiping Norman's food and now doesn't like her own? Anyway, Alson ran to the store while I simultaneously boiled water and got ready. Alson returned with some chicken, which I quickly boiled and fed to Kona. She gobbled it up in seconds! Such a spoiled puppy. Hopefully that filled her up and she will return to her normal eating habits shortly. Luckily we made it to Ruth's Chris on time and were able to enjoy a romantic birthday dinner together. The food was very good, but so rich. I can definitely only eat there once in a blue moon. I will, however, be dreaming of their mashed potatoes in the meantime!

And that is the run down of my week. This one shouldn't be quite as busy so I will try to write some posts with more substance!

Quarter Century

Today is Alson's 25th birthday!

Although I've been giving him birthday gifts all month, today I will be sure to spoil him rotten. I am so lucky to have such a loving and caring husband. Happy birthday...I love you!

Weekend Recap

Since we knew my parents would be here for Valentine's Day, Alson and I exchanged gifts earlier this week. He surprised me with a dozen red roses on Thursday and I gave him Yours & Mine (it was on super sale at CVS a few weeks ago) last weekend. I also got breakfast in bed everyday last week! Nothing fancy, just my favorites (cereal, English muffin with PB, Eggo's), which made it extra special. I am definitely not a morning person so this really helped to start my day.

Why is it that long weekends fly by faster than normal weekends? My parents and their new doggy arrived around 6:30 on Friday night. Isn't Norman so sweet looking?

He has the cutest under bite! He is so good with pictures and does not need to be tricked into looking at the camera. Quite different than taking pictures of Kona!

After meeting Norman and getting settled we headed out for a bite to eat. We didn't have reservations because we weren't sure when my parents would arrive, so we walked around the area to find a place that wasn't packed. We ended up at a little pub on Connecticut; it was really yummy and laid back. Alson claimed the fish and chips rivaled ones he had in Dublin. I think that means we will be heading back there for more fish and chips.

On Saturday we spent the day at the dog park, Whole Foods, and just hanging out in our apartment. After some shopping, Wii, naps, and reading we got ready and headed to Clyde's at Gallery Place for dinner. It was okay, nothing to rave about, but since we had to get last minute reservations (my parents didn't decide they were visiting until last week) we didn't have many restaurants to choose from. Here are Alson and I before dinner. We need some sun (or bronzer)!

Yesterday we ate breakfast at a restaurant around the corner and hit up the farmer's market before my parents headed back to NY. After that Alson and I lounged around and enjoyed some quality time with Kona. I think she was jealous of all the attention Norman was getting!

Today Alson and I thought it would be fun to rearrange our bedroom because we are getting a new mattress this week. We moved ALL of our stuff, including the furniture, into our living room and then vaccumed and dusted the nooks and crannies we don't get to on a weekly (monthly?) basis. After attempting to rearrange we determined it wasn't possible to set up our bedroom any other way and accepted defeat by putting everything back where it was initially positioned. Ugh. At least we cleaned? This really made us realize we DO NOT have enough space and definitely would like to move into a bigger apartment. We of course have to wait and see where/if I get a job, but hopefully we can move out to the Alexandria area. I am looking forward to closet space and dog friendly establishments! Let's hope the stimulus plan creates more jobs in the public schools!

It was so nice to have today off and hopefully this week will fly by as well. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will....we have two birthdays to celebrate and mock trial to prepare for in our house. Busy busy!

Hope you all had a fun and exciting weekend as well!

Family Vist Part 1

My parents are coming to visit this weekend! I can't wait, it should be a lot of fun. Not only are they coming, but they are bringing their new dog, Norman!

Look familiar? Yes, my parents got a dog that looks very similar to Kona. They are too funny. Norman is a maltese, so he is smaller than Kona, but other than that they could be siblings! I can't wait to meet the little rascal, apparently he is a handful. Should be interesting having two dogs in our apartment!

And yes, the title of the post is Family Visit Part 1. That is because Alson's parents are coming to visit next weekend, so we will be entertaining again!

Perfect Day

Today is one of those perfect days. Here is what has happened so far...

My wonderful husband woke me up with breakfast in bed for no reason at all.

We had lunch on the patio of a restaurant around the corner.

We took Kona to the dog park.

Alson got offered a summer position! It's not paid, but hopefully he can get some credit from his law school.

Our neighbors delivered a mileage check that accidentally got placed in their mailbox. $116 dollars! Have I ever mentioned that 116 is my lucky number?

I hope everyone else is enjoying the last of the weekend as much as we are!

Girl's Night

Greetings from North Carolina!

Why is that I couldn't wait to move away from here and now when I visit I want to move back? Granted, I don't want to live in the same town, or part of the state for that matter, but something about being out of the hustle and bustle of the city speaks to me. I am convinced I am one of those "grass is always greener" people when it comes to living situations. Perhaps that is why I have lived in 12497 places. I really hate the process of moving, but I get bored with apartments, cities, states, etc. pretty easily. I would have no problem picking up and moving as long as I have an awesome new apartment/house to live in (and of course a job with my husband and puppy tagging along too). Maybe after law school....

When I come down for my internship meeting I always stay with one of my good friends from grad school. She took an internship in the district where our university is, so it makes my trips a lot cheaper. Usually we go out to a restaurant, share some appetizers, and have a glass of wine the night before our meeting, but when I called her yesterday to let her know I was close, she told me that she and her roommate were hosting a "girl's night" at their apartment. Hmm...I was a little skeptical. I didn't know anyone and would be an outsider!

It ended up being a really nice night. My friend made a chicken casserole dish, one person brought rice, another brought salad, one brought brownies, and the rest of the girls brought wine. We spent most of the night talking about mindless stuff, which was perfect after a long day. They have been doing this for almost two months and rotate to a new person's house every week. Although once a week seems a little much in my busy life, I was thinking of starting something like this.

Who's in?

Journal For Your Honey

With Valentine's Day fast approaching I wanted to let everyone know that Winston is giving away a Between Me and You Honey Journal on his blog!

I bought two of the Honey journals almost a year ago and highly recommend them! Alson and I filled them out in the months before our wedding and then we exchanged journals on our wedding night. It was a wonderful experience and we both cherish everything that is written in the journals.

You have until Sunday, February 8th at 2pm to enter this giveaway. There are lots of ways to get extra entries too! All you have to do is head over to the Sand Dune Publishing web site and take a look around. Then leave a comment on Winston's blog. Be sure to leave your email address so that he can contact you!

De-Stress Me

I have the craziest week ahead so my posting may be few and far between. Or I may post a bunch as a way of procrastinating.

Either way, my stress levels are likely to be through the roof by the end of the week because I have tons and tons of stuff on my to do list. For starters, I have to go to North Carolina on Thursday for an internship meeting, so that is always stressful just because of the 5 hour drive there and back in a 24 hour period. It doesn't help that I have to have the ultimate final draft of my thesis ready by Thursday either. And my portfolio, so I can graduate. Plus all the reports I need to write this week. Okay, enough complaining.

After this week I am hoping to de-stress by doing something relaxing and/or good for my mental health. In my past (pre-internship/law school/bread winner) life I would have splurged for a massage or even a mani-pedi, but since we are on a tight budget and my mom isn't here to go with me (ahem...indulge her only daughter), I need some low cost ideas.

What do you do when you are stressed and need to unravel? Or do any DC gals know of some low cost places I may be able to hit up?

Inauguration Weekend Recap (9 days later)

With the double whammy of being unmotivated and sick, I never posted about the fun parts of inauguration weekend! Since I am likely the last person in the world to still be talking about it, I will make it brief.

Our friends from NC came up for the weekend (they are also the ones that came and ran the 10k) and we got to spend a bunch of time with them. We first met up with them on Sunday at the We Are One concert, which was a really awesome experience. We had a pretty decent view and could hear everything perfectly. Here are a few pics from the concert:

Our View

Couple Shots.... Freezing! But Having Fun!

The atmosphere at the concert was electric! Later that night we watched it again on HBO to kind of re-live the experience, and it was definitely way cooler when we were there. My favorite part of watching it on TV though, was seeing the "wave" of people jumping up when Garth Brooks was singing "Shout". The way the speakers worked, there was a minor, minor delay from the front of the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, resulting in a wave of jumping instead of one fluid jump. Maybe you have to see it to understand. Anyway...

On Monday our friends came and spent the night at our place (they usually stay with family in VA, but didn't want to deal with the metro) and we had a nice night eating, drinking wine, and playing Wii. So much fun!

It was so great being part of history, even if we didn't actually witness the inauguration. Maybe someday we will witness more history when a woman is sworn into office!

Alive and Well

According to the Wii Fit, I've lost 4.9 pounds since Thursday.

What's my secret?

A bad case of the flu. I woke up at 2 AM yesterday morning and was seriously ill until about noon today. It was not pretty and I literally felt like I was dying. I know that the first year working in the schools is notoriously rough because you have to build up your immune system, but man, I feel like I have battled 903157 illnesses since I started in August. Yuck.

Luckily I am feeling tons better and am on my way to being healthy again. Plus, I only had to take one sick day because today we had a snow day. Funny how being sick makes you appreciate the small things!

Unmotivated

I have tried writing seven different posts today. After each initial sentence I hit delete and switch topics. Everything I want to write about seems so daunting and will take a lot of effort and I am just not feeling it lately. Maybe I will be more inspired to write next week....

Inauguration Catharsis

Overall we had a great weekend. Before I post about all the fun and exciting things we did (in another post) I must complain about our failed attempt to get onto the Capitol grounds for the inauguration, if only for the cathartic release of pent up stress.

Here is what happened:

We left our apartment and walked approximately 3.5 miles to get to the south side of the Capitol (we had to take a roundabout way and walk through the 3rd St. Tunnel).

Walking through the tunnel...which was actually kind of cool. People were so excited!

When we finally arrived near our ticket gate we saw a line and asked a volunteer if this was our line. She said yes and "go to the back, it is about a block down the road". Ha!

As we were walking to the end, we kept asking volunteers and people in line if we had the same color tickets and they ensured us they did. We followed the line "to the end" for almost an hour. It snaked around 11 blocks (another mile of walking?).

Snaking Line

When we finally reached the end of the line we did not move for almost 30 minutes. When we did move, it was about an inch and it took another 5 minutes to move another inch. The line also stretched two or so blocks behind us. There was no way we were going to make it to the front by the time the ceremony started.

Standing Still

At 10:30 we decided to cut our losses and hop on the metro (our line was stopped in front of L'Enfant Plaza) so we could make it home in time to at least watch the inauguration on TV. Because the metro was only stopping at certain places we had to get off at Metro Center and walk another mile. We decided to stop at a neighborhood bar to warm up and get some food and we were able to catch everything on TV, but it was not the same as experiencing the excitement first hand!

Sad and Freezing

The problem was that no one really knew what was going on and the volunteers had no way of communicating with the front of the line and were unable to keep everything orderly. This resulted in people waiting in our line with the wrong tickets, and no tickets, and who knows what else. What needed to happen was some kind of pre-ticket screening and blockade so that only (x color) ticket holders were allowed past a certain point. Ugh! Plus there was only one gate for all the silver ticket holders. Really? The lack of organization, signage, and communication really ruined the experience for a lot of people.

Deep breaths....

On My Own

I am on my own tonight. As in, my husband is not here to join me for dinner. I think this may be the first time this has happened to me since we have lived together.

Since returning home from work, I have eaten a small piece of leftover homemade pizza, a picklepak, and a handful of craisins. Not exactly a well-balanced meal. I just have no motivation to cook (or pick something up since it is like 20 degrees out) when I am the only one eating. It's been so long since I've been on my own (December 15th, 2006 to be exact....did I ever mention that I am very good with dates?) that I don't know what to do when I don't have dinner plans! It also doesn't help that there is a mouse loose somewhere in the kitchen. Gross!

I suppose I could have made some dinner plans with friends, but I will be out with a couple girls tomorrow night and didn't want to be away from my puppy (who is almost 3 and certainly not a puppy anymore) for two nights in a row. I know, I know, I'm ridiculous. I would feel guilty leaving her after being gone all day anyway. At least tomorrow night Alson will be home to keep Kona company.

On the plus side of being alone for the evening, I gave myself a mini-pedicure and painted my nails. Now I won't be embarrassed again at yoga on Saturday morning. Unless I almost pass out again....ugh! I'm also watching a Snapped marathon on Oxygen. Why am I obsessed with cryptic shows like this?? Seriously, I could watch Law & Order, CSI, NCIS, etc., etc. all day long (and sometimes do). Alson would not be happy if he was watching these kind of shows all night. It's so nice to be controlling the remote without any complaints (love ya honey!).

Ahh, the joys of being alone for the evening!

So Excited!

A lot of metro DC residents are fleeing town this weekend to avoid the chaos of the inauguration (is that supposed to be capitalized?), but we are planning to stay and take in the historic event. We thought about renting out our place and taking a mini-vacaction, but we ultimately decided that the hassle would not be worth the thousand dollars we may (or may not) have gotten. Now that inauguration weekend is approaching I am getting really excited!

I am pumped for the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial concert this Sunday. The list of performers is pretty sweet: Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder. Should be fun!

We also are planning to wrangle the masses and head down to the Capitol on inauguration day because we have tickets for the swearing-in ceremony. After that we are planning to head home and watch the parade on TV. You can't witness it all, ya know? Later that evening our neighbors are having a BBBHB (Bye Bye Bush Hello Barak) party. It may not be a fancy inaugural ball, but I foresee lots of champagne!

What are your plans for the long weekend?

Sunday, January 11, 2009

I admit...

Our Christmas tree is still up and I have no plans to take it down this week.

My favorite yoga pose is child's pose.

Yesterday we cleaned our apartment for the first time since early December.

I'm a little jealous that my hometown got 7 inches of snow yesterday.

I don't like talking on the phone unless I have something specific to say.

For the past four days I have had "paint nails" on my mental to do list, but still haven't done it.

Learning Spanish vocabulary is relatively easy. Learning conversational Spanish is a lot harder.

I spent all day cuddling with my family, watching football, and playing Wii and it was perfect!

So Not Ready

One day during our holiday vacation in NY, Alson and I babysat my cousins (2 and 4 yrs old*). It was a last minute request from my aunt; my grandmother usually watches her daughters but grandma was sick and wouldn't be able to babysit. We didn't have anything planned so we agreed to watch them for the day.

I had a dentist appointment in the morning, so I brought the 2 year old along with me. This was quite the experience. Luckily my hygienist is my mom's cousin (gotta love small towns) so she was totally fine with it and entertained my cousin between cleaning, flossing, poking, prodding, etc. My cousin made out with stickers and two toothbrushes (she asked if she could have one for her sister too, haha) so I think she was happy.

After we picked up the 4 year old from preschool, Alson and I took them to Chuck E. Cheese. I hadn't been there since I was a child. Man, that place is overwhelming when you are an adult! First, we had to stand in line and order...which is no easy task when the kids are so excited and certainly don't want to just be standing around when the playroom holds so much excitement! Then we had to try and keep them at the table and have them eat their pizza. Again, the playroom holds too much excitement to sit still and eat. My pretty white jacket also mysteriously got some pizza smudges on it during this time. Note to self: children will dirty not only themselves, but you as well. I guess I should have known better than to wear a white coat to CEC. Alson and I then split the tokens and decided to each take a girl out into the playroom. Alson headed off with my 4 year old cousin while I chased around my 2 year old cousin. The games and rides were the perfect entertainment. I will note that the 2 (almost 3) year old was very insistent on doing EVERYTHING herself. This was hard to deal with because I obviously wanted her to be safe and help her when she needed it, but then I also learned quickly that intervening when she doesn't want help results in a tantrum. I narrowly avoided many of them that day. After all the tokens were gone we hit up the bathroom, which is much more complicated with two little girls, and headed out to the car. Did I mention their car seats? They are such a pain to maneuver! Plus, the shins of my jeans got all salty from leaning up against the car when trying to buckle them in. Apparently I'm destined to be dirty when I have kids.

This whole experience reminded us that we are certainly not ready for the responsibility that comes with little kids. Granted, we wouldn't be thrown into the lives of our own 2 and 4 year olds immediately, but still...I can't imagine the responsibility of having a newborn around either. I definitely have moments when I say I want to have a baby right now, but seriously...this was the best birth control ever.

*My aunt has another on the way. Yikes! That will make 17 grandchildren for that family.
